d'Arenberg The Hermit Crab Mclaren Vale 2015
Rated by ecola on September 13, 2017

Rating 33+

A pretty nice wine. Solid weight and body, expressive white fruit flavors and floral aromatics. Good value. Paired well with mushroom and grilled chicken ravioli in a white cream sauce.

Dr. Heidemanns-Bergweiler Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett 2015
Rated by ecola on September 11, 2017

Rating 33+

Bright white fruit with balanced acidity. The sweetness is more of a ripe and juicy feel as opposed to sugary. Great match with the Chinese takeout we had for dinner. Drinking well now, but should last at least a few more years.

Zotovich Estate Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills 2013
Rated by ecola on September 11, 2017

Rating 33

Soft and smooth mouthfeel, some cherry, strawberry, and pomegranate come through. Seems to lack intensity and focus, a bit dull. Tastes fine, just not exciting. Decent qpr for twenty, I guess.

Buoy Ten Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2015
Rated by ecola on September 10, 2017

Rating 33

Medium body with red cherry and subtle spice. Very smooth on the palate and easy to drink. A bit one dimensional, but a solid value.

Ego Bodegas Marionette Jumilla 2014
Rated by ecola on September 6, 2017

Rating 11

On first pop n pour this tastes like the meat filling in Chef Boyardee ravioli. Thankfully that blows off after the first glass. Medium body and soft on the palate with flavors of stewed red cherry and little bit of oxidation creeping in. The wine is not flawed, just not all that good. Not totally offensive that I'll dump it out, I have a high tolerance for pain.

Ace and Able Pinot Noir Dundee Hills 2015
Rated by ecola on September 6, 2017

Rating 22

Light to medium body with moderate acidity. Red cherry and pomegranate flavors seem to be a bit watered down. Reminds me of making Kool-Aid and you add way too much water. Clean from start to finish, I just want a bit more intensity.

Rubicon Estate Cask Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
Rated by ecola on December 25, 2016

Rating 44

Drinking very well at this stage. Medium to full body. Dark cherry with some earth starting to settle in. Very soft and smooth mouthfeel. Silky finish with minimal tannin. Drink now if you have any.

Merryvale Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2011
Rated by ecola on July 26, 2016

Rating 44-

I opened this at the winery yesterday, about 33 hours ago, drinking really well now. On pop n pour, there is a bit of a thin feel with an herbal streak. Dark red fruit comes through now with a full bodied finish. Patience will be rewarded with this one. The acidity will allow this to age nicely. I agree with acorelli about the finish being a bit short. A good value at 40 for a Napa Cab. (Full disclosure, I work in tasting room at Merryvale, miss you guys!)

Antica Hirpinia Taurasi Riserva 2006
Rated by ecola on July 1, 2015

Rating 44-

Earth driven nose with red cherry in the background. Similar on the palate with a richness that I really like. Balanced acidity with a smooth finish. Drink now as it feels like the peak is here. Great with pasta, chicken, and red sauce.

Two Hands Shiraz Bella's Garden 2007
Rated by ecola on May 20, 2015

Takes an hour to open up. Fully developed at this time. Blackberry, blueberry, black tea, and a little cherry comes through. Medium to full body, very smooth palate and soft finish. May be past it's peak, drink now.

Flora Springs Chardonnay 2012
Rated by ecola on October 13, 2014

Rating 33

First bottle...Light oak influence with soft apple and subtle caramel flavors. Medium body. Moderate acidity. Easy to drink, not very exciting but decent....second bottle...drank cold out of the fridge straight from the bottle while cleaning up after the earthquake. No stems, no problem. A decent wine for the chairman's price. I traded with these guys and they threw in this chard to even up the deal. Feels good to review a CS again.

Offley Boa Vista Vintage Port 1997
Rated by ecola on December 25, 2013

Rating 55-

Cork crumbled like the Steelers defense this season. Had the most sediment of any wine I have had. That being said, this is fantastic. Rich and smooth on the palate. Dark fruit, graham cracker, and some toffee flavors. A bit hot on the finish, but at 20% what would you expect. Long finish. Will be drinking quite well for a long time. Happy Holidays!

Medlock Ames Chardonnay Russian River 2008
Rated by ecola on June 3, 2012

Big and buttery, caramelized apple vanilla cream. Not really my style. I do like the acid that creeps in on the finish. Too much oak to let any fruit out. May pair well with a creamy and rich dish.

Very oaky and creamy on it's own. Paired with chicken turned into a pretty good wine. The oak influence faded and the fruit was able to come out and show dark cherry. Not as good as the 04 and 05.

Blackberry and graham cracker aromas. Full body with some heat, but it feels good. Dark flavors of blackberry, blueberry, and graham cracker pie crust. Aromas and flavors of very ripe to almost overripe black fruit. Doesn't show much varietal character, just a blast of dark sugary berries. If tasted blind I would assume this to be Shiraz. Short finish. If you in the mood for a bomb this will suit you just fine.

If you like NZ SB you will like this. Be prepared though. There is a load of green pepper and grassiness. Pretty good, I liked it for the unique flavor profiles.

Steltzner Cabernet Franc Stags Leap District 2006
Rated by ecola on June 20, 2011

Rating 44-

Pretty tight on aromas, only a little tobacco and blackberry coming through. A full body and very dry on the palate. Much more old world in style than I expected. Doesn't have the vegetables the Loire has, but has a more restrained and compact style. This may be way too young to drink. There is a dark cherry and tobacco mix that gives you a hint of what this wine could be. Serious tannins that grip the $*#% out of your mouth.

Aromas of graphite, herbs, just a little bit of smokieness, and black fruit in the background. Medium to full body on the palate with great intensity of flavor. Minerality and blackberries come out with balanced acidity. This tastes much younger than seven years old. Sweet gripping tannins. Has a promising future...when was this $8, I think I paid $18. Tasted again on 7/5/18: Last had this over six years ago. Still drinking quite well. Rich on the palate with earth leading the way no some dark fruit on the background. Develops more intensity and depth with air. Smooth and long finish. Comment (16 views)

Aromas of cherry, strawberry, and red raspberry all mashed up together with a smokiness in the background. Soft and silky on the medium body palate with red fruit and a little cola coming out. The acidity here will make a good food wine. Enough tannins and structure to drink for a few more years.

Fresh aromas of grapefruit, peach, and some floral action. Very crisp and clean on the medium body palate with lemon and lime flavors. The great acidity will allow this to compliment many different dishes. I'd drink this by the end of 2011 for the freshness, but the acidity should keep this going for a year or two if you forget about in the cellar.

Aromas of dark cherry, cassis, and a little smokey oak. Very tight and tannic on the palate. The cherry and cassis come through but are then absorbed by the dry tannins. Finish appears thin on flavor but the dry tannins take that over also. I think this is too young to drink now. I'd like to try another in 5-6 years.

Oak, oak, oak, FREAKIN OAK! Very little characteristics of this wine are allowed to come through because they are masked by the branch that is lodged in my head. There is some dark berry flavor, but I don't get much else. It feels like there could be more here if the oak was dialed back a notch or maybe the fruit is just weak. Not a terrible wine, but you can find this flavor profile for $8. Sometimes a lady looks better without all the makeup.

Deep, dark, and more complex than I thought it would be. Flavors of blackberries and red raspberries and fresh and there is an undertone of smokey wood, a little leather, and dry tobacco. There is no indication of the 15.5% alcohol, which is a testament to the quality of the fruit. Dry and gripping on the finish.

It was a merlot at first then went to aussie shiraz land. As my wife said, it still did the job, as we drank this during the Steelers win over the Chargers.

Nice buttered popcorn nose with a hint of vanilla. Not over-oaked, which I can't stand, this is well balanced. Enjoyable creamy mouthfeel. Vanilla, apple and a hint of spice come through on the palate. Well structured balance between fruit, acidity, and alcohol.

Pretty standard nose of apple and pear, but what makes it interesting is a mineral aspect thrown in the mix. Nicely blended apple/pear flavor with a hint of lemon zest coming through on the finish. There is a hint of the oak monster here but he is only a baby and nothing to be scared of. Leaning more toward full bodied.

This wine reminds me of a NZ sauv blanc, except it's a white super tuscan. This is much different than the 2004 which had a real mineral feel to it. It's not bad, just not what I expected. Even though the bottle says it was only aged 4-5 in new oak, that seems to be too much and is slightly overpowering.

This is over-oaked. I expected a little more from this bottle which is regularly priced at 19.99. It reminds me of a cheap Cali chard with the oak dominating the nose, palate, and finish. It's not overly offensive, but the oak overshadows the apple flavors.

I really liked this and I expected not too. It's hard to throw out those preconceived notions. I expected the oak monster to jump out of the bottle and stab me in the mouth with a tree branch. There is oak here but it is very nicely proportioned. The nose is like a baked apple pie with a hint of cinnamon. Apples and vanilla cream are very evident on the palate. This wine has an amazing feel that just coats the mouth with flavor. The finish has nice acdity but does drop off quickly. Overall, a great buy.
