Berton Vineyard Cabernet Merlot Outback Jack 2014
Rated by dontime on August 11, 2015

Rating 22

Okay, but much better $9.00 wines in the state. Pretty primary, with little left after the first couple of seconds.

Carini Alicante Bouschet A2B 2013
Rated by dontime on August 1, 2015

Rating 33+

Wow on the PQR scale! On sale at $9.00 and it's a winner at that price, and probably a bit more. I'm not familiar with the Alicante Bouschet grape but found this surprising delightful. Dark red fruit, some coffee and dirt balanced with solid acidity. If scoring 87-89. Mixed reviews here and on CT. Might be some bottle variation out there.

Quinta do Portal Grande Reserva 2007
Rated by dontime on July 29, 2015

Rating 44

Rich, dark and full bodied, this Reserva delivers a very nice old world experience. Dark purple fruit and fully integrated tannins yield a satisfying and lasting experience. While I'd like it better at twenty bones, I've had much less for much more. I'd be at 91-93 on a 100 point scale.

Henry's Drive Pillar Box Red 2010
Rated by dontime on July 21, 2015

Rating 33+

Brings significant value at the state monopoly store pricing of $7.99 (although according to CT, Costco has it for a dollar less). Held up remarkably well over three nights. Dark fruit and licorice, solid acidity and a longer-than-expected finish. Medium + in the mouth. I plan to stock up on this week night pizza wine. If scoring 87-89.

Barrel 27 Syrah Old Habits Die Hard 2011
Rated by dontime on January 22, 2015

Rating 33+

Very nice at $13. Might be something bottled exclusively for the state monopoly store, as I do not see any info on the Barrel 27 website or elsewhere on "Old Habits Die Hard". In any event, flavorful, plenty of fruit, nicely balanced with a smooth finish. Held up well on day two with heat dissipating.

Can't add too much. As James indicates, tastes darn good. I'll go back for a few more.

Cultivate The Feast 2010
Rated by dontime on December 7, 2014

Rating 33-

Finally got to try a bottle. Meh. Thin and one-dimensional to me. At $8, an $8 wine. At the ask of $25, very overpriced. Plenty of better options. Easy to see why Ruby Tuesday considered this for a "by the glass" selection. Meh is meh no matter how cheap it is.

Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Trailside Vineyard 2000
Rated by dontime on September 15, 2013

Rating 44+

Opened an hour prior to consumption. Blue fruit and eucalyptus on the nose with ripe black fruit, leather, licorice, tobacco and mint on the palate. Plenty going on here with no need to hurry with remaining bottles.

Tudor Pinot Noir Anderson Valley 2006
Rated by dontime on June 30, 2013

Rating 33

JRad hit it on the head. Not for big the Cali fans. As noted, light bodied. Mine looked a little brown at the edges. Soft in the mouth with none of the bright fruit found in most Cali PNs. Interesting with the bottle age, but I don't think I'll be going back for more.

Highwire Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Fruit punch. And not in a good way. Between this and the '04 Vidal, Steve is batting .500.

Vidal Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2004
Rated by dontime on May 22, 2013

Rating 44+

Consumed over two nights. Just got better and better. Fabulous QPR from the state monopoly store. Fruit forward, in a good way, with lots of black cherry, cassis and licorice. Smooth finish that lingers like the sun setting over the ocean. Went back for another case of this daily drinker.

Shirvington Shiraz McLaren Vale 2005
Rated by dontime on December 18, 2012

Rating 33+

Held on to this one a while. A lot of that big fruit noted by earlier tasters is gone. Tart, red fruit, but a lot of cedar, vanilla and leather. Quick finish leaves one slightly underwhelmed.

Maculan Dindarello IGT 2010
Rated by dontime on December 11, 2012

Great DTQPR. Very floral on the nose, impressive citrus/grapefruit and a buttery banana quality on the palate.

Dubakella Six and Eleven NV
Rated by dontime on December 4, 2012

Rating 33

An odd blend of 68% Grenache from 2011 and 32% Pinot Noir from 2006. A wild trip to say the least. Really odd maple syrup nose when opened. Once in the glass the nose became sweet smokey meat. On the palate, bacon, licorice, green pepper and cherry. After a couple of hours very smooth and tasty. I can't say I'll run out and buy more ($15), but I can say I enjoyed its evolution in the glass. Bonus points for a really cool label.

Simi Pinot Noir 2010
Rated by dontime on December 3, 2012

Rating 33+

State monopoly store Chairman's selection priced at $14.99. Also available at Costco, so no one seems to be paying the $25 "retail". Solid Cali PN. Bright red fruits, spice and bit of oak and a pleasant mouth feel. At $25 marginal. At $15 a solid QPR.

Barrel 27 Grenache Rock and a Hard Place 2009
Rated by dontime on December 3, 2012

Rating 33+

Odd. A really funky nose upon opening - not barnyard, but maybe the wet rock mentioned by another taster. Started out slow, but after 90 minutes the palate displayed rich black fruit, spice and a heavy dose of spearmint. I really enjoyed the mint component. Left a portion of the bottle for the next day, which was a mistake - it didn't do well overnight and was close to undrinkable the next afternoon. At the state monopoly store price of $12, this is a winner in the QPR category if you can finish the bottle in one sitting.

Bacio Divino Pazzo Napa Valley 2008
Rated by dontime on November 10, 2012

Rating 33+

Been waiting for this one to hit the shelves in western PA as I needed a go to wine for the holidays. Gets a 90 from WA and has (as of today) a 90.5 average on CT over 28 users, several of whom gave it 95+. I'm not quite there, but its a solid wind and I would score, if I did such things, in the high 80's. Lots of spice and herbs mixed with red and black fruit. A very pretty nose. Has some backbone, although I don't think it's built to last. I'll pick up a few more at $15. Found a web site offering this wine for sale that indicated the following blend. 80% Sangiovese, 7% Syrah, 2% Petite Sirah, 8% Merlot.

R Wines Chateau Chateau Skulls Australia 2007
Rated by dontime on April 5, 2012

Rating 33+

Solid, as advertised (here) wine. Old world for sure, with dirty barnyard flavors minus the barnyard funk. Went down well with pizza on a Wednesday night. Mrs. dt - who we all know has a better palate than mine, said she really liked this...

Val Berger Fitou 2009
Rated by dontime on February 10, 2012

Rating 22+

Decent nose, thin (sorry Steve, no way this is "medium bodied"), watery, with some red fruit and earth. A bit more time might bring it together a little more, but I wouldn't hold it for long. Worth every bit of $9.

Alexander Valley Vineyards Zinfandel Redemption 2006
Rated by dontime on February 9, 2012

Rating 33

PNP. Then drank. Paid $13 on sale at the state monopoly store. Hard to complain. I've decided that Zinfandel is not one of my favorite grapes. Fruit forward, with a reasonable amount of acid. Didn't change my life, but at $13 didn't expect it to. Feeling pretty good after consuming 3/4 of the bottle. If scoring 85-86.

Dubakella Pinot Gris Rouge 2010
Rated by dontime on January 7, 2012

Rating 11-

Possibly the worse wine I have ever tried. Yeasty nose. Palate of cheap champagne and lite beer. Lingering taste that just won't go away. One glass - shared with Mrs. dontime - who agreed 100% - the rest is down the drain.

Coniglio Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2005
Rated by dontime on November 17, 2011

Rating 33

PNP alongside the ’07 Vezer Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Special Reserve Suisun Valley. Very subdued nose of dirty barnyard. Palate full of sweet fruit and oak with some backbone. Finish seemed a bit thin and short. Evolved over the course dinner and came together nicely. Mid 80 point wine for me. Another solid value for twenty bones. Also ended up the evening with a glass of ’82 Château Gruaud Larose which blew both of the Napa cabs away. But that was not unexpected.

Vezer Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Special Reserve Suisun Valley 2007
Rated by dontime on November 17, 2011

Rating 33

PNP alongside the ’05 Coniglio Cabernet Sauvignon Napa. Had the opposite reaction to others. This came out of the bottle as big fruit bomb and generally stayed that way over the course of the next couple of hours. Black fruit, licorice and sweet oak with no appreciable change. Very drinkable and would appeal to the vast majority of wine drinkers. Mid 80 point wine for me. Solid value at twenty bones. Gets the award for one of the longest names in the CS program (60+ letters). Also ended up the evening with a glass of ’82 Château Gruaud Larose which blew both of the Napa cabs away. But that was not unexpected.

Housley's Century Oak Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Judy's Vineyard 2009
Rated by dontime on September 15, 2011

Rating 44-

Day one - ABV at 14.8% and it shows. Some dark red fruit under the alcohol and a touch of coffee towards the end. Day two - alcohol has calmed down. Some menthol, red fruit, chocolate. A bit bitter, but much better than day one. Gripping tannins, maybe this one needs to lay down a while. It's an 88 or 89 to me. Giving it a 4- here.

Mount Langi Ghiran Shiraz Billi Billi 2005
Rated by dontime on September 13, 2011

Rating 33+

$10 - hard to complain too much. Enough substance for me to call it wine. Tart cherry, some green wood. Good start, decent middle, no real finish. Probably not gonna rush out to buy more, but not unhappy that I gave it a try. Edit - improved over the course of the evening. Some licorice came through and nicely balanced. Added a + to the score.

Huge nose of sour cherry and fig. Nice mouth feel - soft and smooth with more sour cherry, fig and maybe a bit of licorice. Short finish. Nice value wine, but I am not found of the overpowering sour cherry flavors. Rated an 86 on CT. DTQPR = 90.24

Decent cali cab. Needed time in the glass to come around. Dark red fruit - plum and cherry, with some sweet vanilla. A bit out of balance and harsh at frist, but smoothed out after an hour or so. Lacking a substantial finish. Rated 86 on CT. DTQPR = 86.45

Copain L'hiver Syrah California 2008
Rated by dontime on July 23, 2011

Rating 44-

Wonderful QPR at $11. Medium body and color. On the powerful nose, lots of smoky black fruit and meat. Similar flavors on the palate with the non fruit components taking center stage. Meat, mushroom and smoke - nice balance and got better as we drank it. Rated 89 on CT. DTQPR = 91.41

Two Hands Shiraz Harry & Edward's Garden 2005
Rated by dontime on July 8, 2011

Rating 44

Rich nose of red and blue fruit. Similar flavors on the palate with sweet red fruits dominating. Blueberries and sweet chocolate combine to give this a high "deliciousness" factor. A bit of heat on the finish. Nonexistent tannins. Rated 92 on CT. Another Two Hands winner - great juice - great Chairman's pricing = great bottle of wine.

Louis Latour Santenay 2007
Rated by dontime on June 16, 2011

Rating 33

Drank with tokeaton over dinner alongside a Cali PN. Started out disjointed, then developed into something satisfying. Red fruit, earth and flowers wrapped up in a very dry finish. A nice contrast to the fruit forward Patz & Hall Chenoweth Ranch which we also consumed. I would rate this an 85 on CT.

Atlas Peak Cabernet Sauvignon Mount Veeder 2005
Rated by dontime on May 26, 2011

Rating 22

Major disappointment. I'm out back splitting green oak into firewood. A small piece flies off. I pick it up and chew on it. That would be this wine. Maybe it's in a funny place, but I don't think age will help. Oaky red fruit on the nose. An initial attack of bright red fruit on the palate, but then very unpleasant oak - lots of oak. Supposedly $86 at retail - on sale at the state monopoly store for $30. I am returning my remaining three bottles - not willing to bet that this will improve with time.

Rated by dontime on March 13, 2011

Rating 44-

Decanted 2+ hours. Drank over another 2 hours. Fruit forward nose upon opening that continued through until the bottle was finished. Initial taste yielded dark fruit, licorice and pepper with a somewhat tart finish. After decanting, the tartness seemed to subside and the wine showed great depth of flavors and a nice balance. Blackberry, raspberry, black cherry combined with licorice, vanilla and black pepper. Wonderful QPR at the state monopoly store price of $10. Rated 89 on CT - DTQPR = 91.99

About an hour decant. Needed more. Dark purple in color. Initial nose of raspberry and dark cherry. However after an hour the nose had muted. In the mouth strong oak with dark fruit, some vanilla and a bit of spice. A bit out of balance to me. More bottle time or more air time. Will not touch my second bottle for a while. Rated 89 on CT - DTQPR = 87.29

More than decent $8 bottle of wine. Subdued nose of ripe red fruit and oak. Lots of red fruit - red cherry, raspberry and ripe strawberry on the attack. Mrs. dontime gets chocolate and tobacco at the end although we both agreed the finish was not much more than a blink. Got the last 3 bottles at 231 - this stuff is apparently flying off the shelves. 87 = 3+ = 91.35 DTQPR.

Rich dark garnet in color. Dark fruit on the nose with hints of veggies and licorice. Very fruity on the palate with flavors of black cherries, blackberries and plums. Additional notes of licorice and tobacco leaf. Tannins spoke of additional cellaring time. Certainly a quaffable Alexander Valley cabernet, but at $49 at the state monopoly store, hardly a value. Dancing Hares Vineyard Mad Hatter Napa Valley 2008

Disappointing at this price point. Looks like all of the bottles on CT were purchased in PA, so suspect this is one of those "let's dump it on the neophytes at from the PA LCB" wines. Weak nose of damp red fruit, unexpired red fruit on the palate with no depth. Thin and hot at the finish. Light purple in color, light bodied. Ripe red fruit on the nose, followed by candy like red fruit (raspberries and strawberries) on the palate. A bit too much like Kool-Aid to me. Even at $9.99 at the state monopoly store - not worth a repeat performance. Rated 85 on CT. DTQPR = 87.55

PNP. I don't have a lot of experience with old world style Pinots. I found this very different from the typical new world Pinot - and very enjoyable. Beautiful in color, with no signs of browning. A bit of funk on the nose blew off quickly leaving an earthy nose of wood and dirt and some light red fruit. Very smooth with a wonderful mouth feel. Notes of mushrooms, licorice and coffee. Well structured with a lingering finish. Looks like there may be some bottle variation, but for my money, this is a great value (at $15 on sale) and my other bottle should have plenty of life left. A little out of balance when first opened. Gave it a 30 minute decant, then back in the bottle on the way to the restaurant. At that point things had gotten much better. Deep purple in color, medium to full bodied. A somewhat subdued nose of dark fruit and dusty oak. In the mouth, plenty of blackberries and ripe cherries, with additional sweet flavors of blueberries and plum. More dusty vanilla oak. Short, well balanced and satisfying finish. At $20 from the PA monopoly store, hard to beat. Rated 91 on CT. DTQPR = 90.82

PNP first night. Average with a bitter finish. Night two - Mrs. Dontime described as rotten peas and gasoline. Not a one minus, J2K, but close. Clearly the winery played off the Advocate score and produced some additional stuff with inferior fruit and a similar, but not exact, label. I'm sure the state monopoly store was not the only retailer taken by this scam.

Medium purple in color. A burst of ripe red fruit on the nose, which quickly dies down to more balanced black fruit and oak. Pleasant attack of sour cherry, cassis and a bit of pepper. Finish is a bit hot given the 14.8% alcohol. At $16, not bad but one can find superior or equal Cali cabs for less. Much better second night - heat on the finish was gone. Bumped it two points. Drank over two nights. Expectations high due to notes from fellow PAWineTalk.com friends. I have not had much experience with this grape (Mourvedre). Certainly not fruity, with a nose of dust, dirt and chocolate. Immediately after opening, a wonderfully smooth attack of leather, coffee and chocolate quickly turned bitter and distasteful on the finish. Over time, the back end improved at the expense of the front end. All-in-all very unique, but not my style. Rated 88 on CT. DTQPR = 89.80
