Castelli del Grevepesa Chianti Classico Clemente VII 2011
Rated by acorelli on June 19, 2017

Rating 33+

Good quality Chianti and a good value at $13. Acid seems a bit much to begin but worked well with the chicken "cacciatore" my mother made for a Father's Day dinner . Thanks, Mom!

Castelli del Grevepesa Chianti Classico Clemente VII Riserva 2011
Rated by acorelli on June 19, 2017

Bigger, darker, richer than the non-riserva. Worth the extra few $. Again, not a wine for backyard sipping - it's a food wine.

My decision to buy this bottle was not vindicated by the experience of drinking it.

Simi Pinot Noir Sonoma County 2014
Rated by acorelli on June 16, 2017

Rating 33

Decent basic PN. Far superior to the $10 Montague, not as good as the $18 Londer (of fond memory), so a reasonable price point.

Borgo Maragliano Brachetto 2015
Rated by acorelli on April 29, 2017

Rating 22

A pink, sweet, lightly sparkling wine. Lots of strawberry and peach, but just too sweet. With a tad less sugar, this could be a fun breakfast wine...

OK for $10. You can put this out for a party without feeling any shame.

Chateau Barouillet Or Extreme Monbazillac 2014
Rated by acorelli on February 23, 2017

Rating 33-

(N.B.: This is misidentified as a sparkling wine!) I confess: I love sweet wines. This one has a little harshness to it, otherwise I would have scored it a good bit higher as the pineapple, lemon curd, mango etc. flavors were delightful and there was adequate acidity to balance the sugar. It reminded me of the B & G Sauternes I used to get from time to time in the 1980s, which my buddy and I considered "good rotgut"...

Tua Rita Perlato del Bosco Sangiovese Tuscany 2012

On opening, good fruit and structure but a bit closed, opened up about three hours later to be very good indeed. Glad there was still some left at that point...

Gloria Ferrer Royal Cuvee Vintage Reserve Brut 2007
Rated by acorelli on December 19, 2016

Was concentrating on conversation rather than wine, so no details, but on the rich side rather than the lean one. Delicious, particularly after it lost most of its refrigerator chill.

Montague Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 2012
Rated by acorelli on October 13, 2016

Rating 33-

Nowhere close to the quality of the Londers. Candied fruit, no depth, no breadth, nothing interesting about this wine. Admittedly inoffensive. I have 11 bottles available for sale....

Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Auslese 2012
Rated by acorelli on October 8, 2016

Rating 44-

90. Beautiful gold with a slight greenish tinge. Delicious, rich, typical Riesling flavors. The only thing lacking - what keeps this wine from a considerably higher score - is that there isn't quite enough acidity to balance the considerable residual sugar.

Terrific PQR at state monopoly price of $10. Fairly big, warm wine with good fruit and structure.

Antonin Rodet Hautes-Cotes de Beaune Chateau de Mercey 2014
Rated by acorelli on September 20, 2016

Rating 33+

Light in color and body. A bit of alcohol on the nose along with violets and a hint of cherry preserves. Cherry and strawberry flavors, rather acidic, surprisingly persistent finish. Enjoyable Burgundy at the $15 state monopoly price.

Shannon Ridge Tempranillo Morine Ranch 2012
Rated by acorelli on August 24, 2016

Rating 33+

Medium-bodied fragrant red, cherry with some spice, surprisingly long finish. Ready now. Decent value from PLCB. Revised opion: Lovely wine. Cherry, wild strawberry, tobacco, mushroom. Medium-bodied, good tannic structure. Seems to me to be fully mature.

Nicolas Joly Savennieres-Coulee de Serrant Clos de la Coulee de Serrant 2010
Rated by acorelli on August 4, 2016

Rating 44

Fascinating wine. Bright intense deep gold color, nose seems a little oxidized - like sherry - honey, lemon, tropical flowers. Very rich mouthfeel. Botrytis is evident. A wine that demands your thoughtful attention. If scoring, 92.

Bersano Barbaresco Mantico 2012

Cherry, wild strawberries, a hint of licorice and of leather. Good structure. Terrific Nebbiolo at this price.

Merryvale Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2011
Rated by acorelli on July 25, 2016

Rating 44-

Two hour decant. Lovely rich color, still a little on the purple side. Pleasant nose largely of black cherries and currants, similar flavors. Not a terribly long finish. Very smooth. Could hope for more complexity but a very nice wine. If scoring, 90ish.

Bonpas Luberon Blanc Rhone Valley Vineyards 2014
Rated by acorelli on July 16, 2016

After my ninth bottle, I continue to be impressed with this bargain wine ($8 at the PA stores). Crisp and clean, lovely white fruits (pear, white peach), very light in body and color.

Osborne Pedro Ximenez 1827 Very Sweet NV
Rated by acorelli on June 30, 2016

Rating 33

At $9, excellent QPR. Mostly burnt sugar, plus coffee and raisins. Tongue-coating sweetness, sweeter than most desserts. Should be great with very strong cheeses.

Cesarini Sartori Signae Sagrantino di Montefalco 2007
Rated by acorelli on June 30, 2016

Rating 33+

Heavily tannic - after about an hour the wine smoothed out a bit and I really enjoyed the black cherry, blackberry, and spice. Still, pretty gripping, so needs food.

Carini Captain Fantasy Red California NV
Rated by acorelli on May 27, 2016

Rating 44

Very interesting NV red blend, according to the winery primarily Cabernet Franc with some Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with some wines in the blend from as far back as 2005. Warm and spicy, good red fruits, a delight. If scoring, 91-ish. ($45 from the winery, $20 at your state monopoly.)

Comments (1)

Flegenheimer Bros Paisant Red McLaren Vale 2013
Rated by acorelli on April 29, 2016

Rating 33-

Light bright ruby, strong raspberry and strawberry aromas, the same starwberry and raspberry flavors dominate. If this wine was $4 or $5 a bottle, the world would be a much better place. At $12 (released at $20!?!?) there is a lot of more interesting wine available. Fun, though.

Domaine Salmon Muscadet Sevre et Maine Sur Lie Vieilles Vignes 2014

Domaine des Malandes Chablis Cuvee Amandine 2014
Rated by acorelli on February 27, 2016

Rating 33

I found this a bit disappointing. I even bought a second bottle after reading jhlittle's review, but my impression did not change. It's an OK wine but it struck me as a bit dull, lacking the zing I look for in Chablis. Reasonable Chardonnay at the price, though.

Louis Latour Mercurey 2012

Rating 22

I thought at $20 this would be an excellent value. I was wrong. Bright acidity and what we used to call "varietally correct" - that's about the whole list of positive attributes. Oh, the color is pretty. Simply - and badly - short on flavor.

Feudi di San Gregorio Lacryma Christi Rosso 2010
Rated by acorelli on March 23, 2015

Rating 44-

A big surprise. I am used to lighter, fruitier, simpler Lachryma Christi del Vesuvio reds, not a powerhouse wine like this. It must be the Aglianico predominating (LCdelV being traditionally mostly Piedirosso). Easily worth double the PLCB price.

Saintsbury Pinot Noir Stanly Ranch Carneros 2009

Lanciola Le Masse di Greve Chianti Classico 2009
Rated by acorelli on October 17, 2014

Rating 44

The real deal. The Wine Spectator review is dead on: "This intense red is saturated with cherry, currant and cranberry flavors. There's a pleasant bitter and astringent element, as this matches its fruit to bright acidity and dusty tannins." Needs food, ideally some sort of beef with mushrooms...

Comments (0)

Bernard et Christophe Richel Apremont 2013
Rated by acorelli on September 27, 2014

Rating 33

3 is an average rating, it's an average wine. Which is not to say that it is useless: sharp as a needle, fruit on the nose but not much on the palate, this is a good wine for oysters or smoked fish.

Vineyards Found Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
Rated by acorelli on September 19, 2014

Rating 44-

Perhaps my experience would have been better if I had followed J2K's 4 hour decant recommendation, but since there are only a few times a year that I know what I'll be opening four hours before drinking it I'll provide the PNP report: On first tasting, Cabernet Woman said "big, I like it!" We both thought it developed well in the glass. Rather unyielding at first, after about a half hour it rounded out nicely. A solid effort, typical fruity Napa Cabernet, that will not inspire poetic outbursts but provides real pleasure. You can pay a lot more for a lot less...

Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Cellar Selection 2006

Cabernet Woman surprised me with this bottle yesterday. Classy, elegant, delicious Napa Cabernet, no flaws but lacks the complexity that could merit a higher score.

Marimar Estate Chardonnay Don Miguel Vineyard La Masia 2010
Rated by acorelli on June 13, 2014

Rating 22-

First taste is pretty good: seems they had good grapes to work with. After that: by the end of the evening I was able to build a miniature wine rack for my daughter's dollhouse from the splinters.

Conti Sertoli Salis Valtellina Superiore Grumello 2009
Rated by acorelli on May 16, 2014

Rating 33+

Featherweight Champ. The light pinkish-red with watery edges is misleading -- this elegant wine is quite flavorful. Leather, violets, black cherry on the nose gives way to strawberries on the palate. Acidic snap and tannic burr make this a good "food wine" (not recommended for drinking on its own).

Comments (1)

Highlands Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 2005
Rated by acorelli on May 5, 2014

Damn good. Spicy, warm, and rich. If scoring, 92. Quite vigorous, so if you still have some, no hurry, but drinking beautifully.

Comments (2)

Carini Winery Furzivu Munti Sucu 3 NV
Rated by acorelli on March 21, 2014

Rating 33

Astonishingly port-like. I have been drinking a good deal of low end tawny port these days -- take out almost all the sugar and some of the alcohol and this would be the result. I rather like it but it is the opposite of food-friendly. A good choice for heathen who drink wine by itself, without food.

Comments (2)

Beringer Blanc Knights Valley 2011
Rated by acorelli on March 8, 2014

Rating 33+

Very good wine. Possibly a 4-. The bouquet is Sauvignon - grapefruit, grass. Tasting it my first thought was white Bordeaux: Semillon/Sauvignon blend. When I read the back label and learned that there was also an admixture of Chardonnay and Viognier, the power of suggestion went to work, and I could smell and taste the contribution of each grape. Maybe. Good stuff, great price, will buy more,

Dopff and Irion Crustaces Alsace 2012
Rated by acorelli on February 18, 2014

Rating 33+

An excellent apertif wine, also - as the name suggests - very well suited for shellfish. A bottle of this and a pound and a half of steamed shrimp makes a fine party for one. (I imagine.) Citrus and white fruit flavors, crisp acidity, and a stony bite. I was surprised to learn that this wine is 90% Syvaner, as I had associated that grape with wines that were, let us say, less lean.

Comments (2)

Borgo Scopeto Chianti Classico 2010
Rated by acorelli on February 2, 2014

Rating 33+

I got a copy of Wine Spectator in the mail - don't know why - and this wine was rated 92 and a "smart buy" at $20. It's a smarter buy at $13, but 92 seems like grade inflation to me. Lively young red, good acidity and tannic structure, nice red fruit flavors, well-balanced. A good wine but nothing exciting.

Comments (1)

Chateau Bastor-Lamontagne Sauternes 2003
Rated by acorelli on January 27, 2014

Rating 55

Far better than expected from this modestly priced, unclassified Sauternes chateau. Richness, depth, balance, length, complexity of fruit and spice flavors plus the smoky wonder of botrytis. Just delicious. Color had developed from the original lemon yellow to a medium amber. This sold in 2008 at a PLCB clearance price of $14.99.

Poggio Capponi Chianti Riserva 2010
Rated by acorelli on December 26, 2013

Rating 22+

A decent, light-bodied wine with bracing acidity, clearly intended to accompany a meal. I didn't really study (read) the label when I opened the bottle and was surprised to learn that this is a riserva bottling. It strikes me as an adequate house wine for a Tuscan restaurant, nothing more. With a bit of internet sleuthing I learned that according to the Fattoria a Poggio Capponi website there is Syrah in the blend, though I don't taste any evidence of it. The importer, called Zona-Friedman, is right here in Greensburg. Their website which seems not to have been updated since it's 2012 origin, shows about a dozen wines in the Chairman's program. Interesting.

Chateau St. Jean Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County 2010
Rated by acorelli on November 24, 2013

Rating 33

It's ok. Valid for the price. Standard issue CA Cabernet, which is not a bad thing. Less overtly meretricious than some, e.g., the Starmont form Merryvale...

Secoli Valpolicella Ripasso 2011
Rated by acorelli on November 16, 2013

Rating 33

A decent wine, nothing wrong with it, but rather a disappointment if you think of Ripasso as the poor man's Amarone. There was a 2007 Zenato Ripasso (except that they use the word "ripassa" instead) in the Chairman's program a while back which was excellent -- quite rich, deeply flavorful. This Secoli is perfectly OK(cherry flavors, smooth, well-balanced) but does not engage my interest much.

Helfrich Pinot Gris 2008
Rated by acorelli on November 13, 2013

Marchesi di Barolo Millennium 1990
Rated by acorelli on July 4, 2013

Rating 44+

Absolutely wonderful. Elegant, refined, complex -- this bottle shows the purpose and value of cellaring. Decanted about 90 minutes before drinking. Upon pouring the bouquet is of dried flowers and forest fruits. Flavors of cherry, mushroom, truffle. The structure of this wine is essentially perfect - the tannic scaffolding is all there but goes completely unnoticed. Anyone who was disappointed with this wine and has bottles they would like to sell, let me know.

Dr. Fischer Ockfener Bockstein Riesling Kabinett 2011

Henry Fessy Fleurie 2007
Rated by acorelli on June 7, 2013

Roses and strawberry on the nose, more strawberry and sour cherry on the palate. Light-bodied, as you would expect; 10-15 minutes in the refrigerator makes this even more attractive. Acidic - a food wine, a very pleasant luncheon wine. Not that I would ever drink wine at lunch. An absolute steal at $8.

Deep Sea Red 2008
Rated by acorelli on April 25, 2013

A terrific wine for the $, it will be very popular with the "take away this pale stuff and bring me a glass of WINE" wing of PAWineTalk. (J2K, one of the pillars of that wing, has already indicated his approval.) But I like it, too. Mouth-filling flavors without the sense of overt sweetness that you sometimes get in these Syrah-based blends. Drink up.

Wild Oak by St. Francis Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
Rated by acorelli on February 3, 2013

Rating 44+

If the bottle I opened last night is representative, anyone who has one of these left over is in for a nice surprise. Ratings from 2010 reference tannic grip and hot finish - not any more! Tannins are fully integrated, providing good structure for lots of fruit. Finish is not exceptionally long but smooth and satisfying. My guess is that this wine is at its peak right now.

Sanford Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict Vineyard 2008
Rated by acorelli on January 17, 2013

Rating 44

Very satisfying. I experienced this as much more blackberry than strawberry, with a tiny hint of green pepper and a slightly larger hint of black pepper. Smooth, round, and rich. Not terribly complex - that might come in time - but delicious. Unlike bigred I did not get anything hot on the finish; like bigred I would say the finish is fairly short. That did not impede my enjoyment at all.

3 or 3-. Maybe 2+? Nice fruit, good acidity, decent basic inoffensive chardonnay. Pretty damn boring by the last glass. Not in the same league as the Drouhin St Veran that was so popular nor the Matrot Bourgone for which I might have been the only buyer...

Rated by acorelli on October 20, 2012

Not what I expected. Having had the rather anti-ecola Macrostie Chardonnay before (which I liked), I anticipated a typical big, fruity California Pinot Noir. Instead, this wine is quite similar in style to the well-liked 2007 Joseph Drouhin Chorey-les-Beaune, but with more smokiness and earth. It was a pleasant surprise. Curious to learn jonradus's take on this wine.

Maybe 3+. Crisp and light, with a pleasant citrusy nose and solid apple flavors, plenty of minerality and a touch of oak "butter". Decent quality baby Burgundy. Worth the $16, but not a steal.

A real bargain. Color like Petite Sirah. Alcoholic heat on the nose is gone on day 2 and might very well have been taken care of by an initial decant. Aromas of dark fruits and mushroom, silky mouthfeel, rich fruit flavors include blackberry and dried currant. Finish is fairly long and rich.

Maculan Pino and Toi Veneto 2010
Rated by acorelli on April 7, 2012

This wine is thoroughly inoffensive. You could drink an entire bottle on a Saturday afternoon and without realizing that you had imbibed something other than water. (Don't ask me how I know this.) Sure, it does taste marginally better than tap water, but a good mineral water would give it a run for its money. Of course, its alcoholic content is above zero, so that's a significant advantage. Perhaps that's how you can tell you haven't been drinking water...

A very nice wine though not as rich as I had expected. A taut, "minerally" wine, rather Chablis-like. As Mark did once say, "it's all about the balance, baby!"

My family loved this wine. Very rich, pineapple/banana/honey aromas and flavors. A bit simple at present but should develop beautifully. I plan to buy a few, stick them in a corner somewhere and stumble over them 10-20 years from now...

Lovely rosewater and lychee notes; delicious flavors but lacking the acidity to balance the residual sugar. My experience was not overall negative but will not repurchase.

Very nice everyday wine. It has pineapple and citrus fruit but does not beat you over the head with them. (Ecola will appreciate the absence of oak.) Fresh, balanced, pleasing finish though not long. Good value. Might deserve a plus sign ...

This is a serious attempt to compete with yer actual Champagne. Yeasty, long finish, some bitterness which is (for me) not off-putting. A bargain at this price.

Mastroberardino Aglianico Campania 2008
Rated by acorelli on December 14, 2011

Rating 33

I was frankly rather disappointed in this wine. I have a sentimental fondness for Mastroberardino (some of you are by now all too familiar with my emotional responses to wines) from my time living in Southern Italy, where the Mastroberardino family more or less single-handedly created a wine industry making high-quality wines for export instead of cheap swill for local consumption. It is largely due to Mastroberardino that we see Aglianico wines here at all -- or Greco di Tufo, or Fiano di Avellino -- and their Taurasi (an Aglianico wine) is consistently excellent. This Aglianico, however, has not much to offer. While clearly above the "Sangria line", it is just pleasant and correct and not very interesting.

Jewel-like lemon yellow color; vanilla and pineapple on the nose; classic clear chardonnay flavors; bracing acidity and some body. A worthy successor to the Drouhin St Veran of last year. I'll be buying a case.

Pretty much useless. No major flaws - just missing anything to capture the attention. Reminds me of Romanian cabernets from the 1980s (not that the reference will mean anything to anyone else).. In a well-organized world, this would be a $3 wine.
