Cosentino Winery The Poet Meritage 2005
Rated by Zippy on December 21, 2017

Rating 55

Have been trying these about every two years. This wine has developed very well and is still drinking beautifully. Tannins are present and soft. A real treat. Last bottle.

Precision Wine Company Cabernet Sauvignon Method Napa Valley 2014
Rated by Zippy on October 27, 2017

Rating 44

Loved the Somm Movie and follow up Into The Bottle. This lists Ian Cauble, Master Sommelier, and a great character from the movie as a contributor. It's far from a fruit bomb. Soft and elegant with mild tannins. Not sure if it is worth laying down, but it was fun to try and a pretty good cab for $25.

Carpineto Sillano Tuscany 2001
Rated by Zippy on June 16, 2016

Rating 55-

Tannins have softened since my first bottle a few years ago. Drinking very well. Still has a punch but the tobacco, fruit and oak are balanced. Still got two left!

Henry's Drive Cabernet Sauvignon Padthaway 2010
Rated by Zippy on August 31, 2015

Rating 33

Fruit Bomb. Hard to believe this is Aussie cab. No earthy flavors to be found unless they are hidden by the sweetness. Maybe best to hold until the 2016 window, but doubt it.

Bodega Vega Sauco Adoremus Reserva 1999

A once great wine that died with age. You can tell it had power, now its just fading away.

John Anthony Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2005
Rated by Zippy on December 5, 2014

Rating 44+

Last bottle. This wine has reached its peak. Soft, mellow, restrained. It is starting to get tired a bit but is still an enjoyable wine. 1st bottle a 5, but showing its age. 5/4/2012 - I wrote: (Edit) 90 Points Muted dried fruit up front. The wine got bigger as time moved on. A serious decant would improve this wine greatly. Toasty oak with just the right amount of dry, dusty earth. Some tobacco and just enough tannins to make it a great evening. Will only improve with age.

Cultivate The Feast 2010
Rated by Zippy on December 1, 2014

Rating 44-

Solid wine. Dark with just a little red at the edge. The blend adds depth to the merlot no doubt. Very little sweetness for a wine at this price point. It's got mild tannic structure with just the right amount of acidity. 20+ cases gone in under a week at my store, I got the last three! Ruby Tuesday or not, great value and a pretty damn good wine.

Balius Wines Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
Rated by Zippy on May 24, 2014

Rating 0No Rating

I have sipped a few California Cabernet's in my time. I had trouble finding cab flavors or character. Day 2 not much better, day three there was a hint. Not a bad wine, but few cab flavors. Not fair to rate?!?

Soft. Easy drinking. $24. Better values out there.

Two Hands Shiraz Bella's Garden 2007
Rated by Zippy on November 29, 2013

Rating 55

Cherry, strawberry & blackberry with a little heat. Let it breath about three hours and it just got better with time in the glass. A big and bold Aussie shiraz. The finish is lengthy, the color is deep & dark. Had lost it's "jammy" finish I remember from years ago, and that's not a bad thing. I loved it.

Vineyards Found Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2007
Rated by Zippy on November 19, 2013

Rating 44-

Upon opening, I thought the wine seemed out of balance. After an hour or two it improved greatly. Can't see it getting any better with age and the Clos Du Bois Marlstone at the same price is much more my style, will be taking back 2 of 3. The "Appellation Trading Company" info on the back, and info on the website about exporting to China did not help with my perception either.

Bodegas Triton Tempranillo Tridente 2009
Rated by Zippy on November 5, 2013

Rating 33+

Dark cherry color. Strong nose of black fruit. Oak, vanilla, a hint of smoke with a creamy feel. The 15% alcohol throws this wine off balance. A very good bottle for $12 and will lay one down to see if age makes a difference. Day #2 - alcohol blew off a bit and it settled down nicely. Much more complex.

Vina Bujanda Tinto 2012
Rated by Zippy on November 5, 2013

Bright cherry nose. A bit of sweetness after opening. Very approachable and friendly. Perfect pizza wine.

Highwire Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
Rated by Zippy on April 20, 2013

Rating 22+

Poured through Vinturi. Nose was very flat. Very muted flavors. After about an hour, it did open up quite a bit. Soft tannins, burnt cola, slight eucalyptus.

Alexander Beck Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
Rated by Zippy on April 20, 2013

Rating 44-

Typical Alexander Valley style with intense flavors and aromas. Leather, vanilla, spice, and oak. A great deal at $14.

Clos LaChance Cabernet Sauvignon Estate 2007
Rated by Zippy on July 17, 2012

Rating 44

Blackberry, cherry and a firm dry grip. Tobacco and leather add to the full bodied style with tannins present to increase the finish. Really enjoyed it and my wife commented "this is delicious". A great value at $16.

Havens Winery Meritage 2009
Rated by Zippy on July 6, 2012

Rating 33+

Oak. Red fruit and a short finish. After about an hour, it did open up a bit with black currant and a hint of leather. I was looking for a little bit of dry and dusty. I know Havens closed a few years ago and the property was sold to Trinchero, just not quite sure what juice or what winemaker put this thing together.

Comments (2)

Vina Eguia Tempranillo Reserva 2007
Rated by Zippy on June 12, 2012

Rating 33

All the oak hid the strawberry and dark fruit. A little toast with earth and herbs. Long strands of sediment.

Whitehall Lane Perfect Union Napa 2009
Rated by Zippy on June 12, 2012

Rating 33+

Pop and pour. No bottle aging required. Subtle tannins and a nice blend. $30 ... I don't think so, $17.99 ... maybe one more. Actually improved on day two.

Comments (0)

Emina Tinto Fino Red 2007
Rated by Zippy on May 18, 2012

Rating 33+

A little flat upon opening, but the intensity picked up after an hour or so. Subtle acidity for a Tempranillo. For the $8 price, a very good wine.

Erasmo Maule Valley Chile 2006
Rated by Zippy on May 5, 2012

Rating 33-

Hard to believe that cabernet sauvignon is present at all. Very light bodied but with a dark color. Old world, new world .... or pinot noir. Light cherry flavor with a hint of acid, but not much mouthfeel, very little oak and hardly any tannins. Just nothing going on here. Left it open overnight and will try again. Maybe something will happen on day two.

Bennett Lane Maximus Red 2006
Rated by Zippy on March 19, 2012

Rating 44-

Enjoy Bennett Lane products. This one had a nice balance of oak to fruit. A pretty decent drying tannic structure and a long chalky finish. Decanted for an hour, mild sediment with large amounts gathered on a dry and brittle cork. Drank the second bottle right away.

Newton The Puzzle Napa Valley 2001
Rated by Zippy on March 4, 2012

Rating 55

A little lighter in color than some similar red blends, but this did not disappoint. Flavors of dark berries and tobacco with a little menthol on the finish. Tannins have softened but are still present. Is holding up well, though the cork crumbled upon opening even with proper cellaring.

Comments (2)

Lail Vineyards Blueprint Proprietary Blend 2005
Rated by Zippy on February 24, 2012

Rating 33-

Similar to other tasters. Did not improve on day two either. Will just drink up the other bottles and free up some cellar space.

Demuth Winery Pinot Noir Limited Reserve Anderson Valley 2006
Rated by Zippy on February 2, 2012

Rating 22+

2007 Vintage. Cherry coke all the way. A nice touch of oak and some hints of strawberry. Did not notice the vintage change on purchase. Disappointed.

Bodega Murtia Carmine Monastrell 2008
Rated by Zippy on December 6, 2011

Rating 33+

Rich and earthy with a strong tannic grip. PNP and the alcohol seemed a lot higher than the 14%. On the second day the alcohol blew off and the tannic eased. Much more enjoyable and will rest well for a few years.

Vignerons de Caractere Vacqueyras Seigneur de Fontimple 2009
Rated by Zippy on December 6, 2011

Fruit forward with medium tannins that still grip. Lots of berries, a little oak and a bit on the sweet side. Needs food to shine.

Vezer Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Special Reserve Suisun Valley 2007
Rated by Zippy on October 31, 2011

Rating 44+

"5" ratings are rare around here and they certainly get my attention. Rich and full of blackberry and cassis, Oak and tannins are in balance. I thought the Zinfandel really showed through, in the color and in the richness. A great wine for $20, even though I was skeptical with the label. Thanks for the review J2K, I am glad I didn't miss this one.

Carini Cuvee Sixty Five Napa Valley 2003
Rated by Zippy on January 28, 2011

Rating 55-

Took me a while to rate this wine. Big, bold, powerful and full bodied. Poured through Vinturi. Immediate nose of eucalyptus with cedar, oak and tobacco to follow. Big acid structure, gripping tannins that last forever. Drank by itself with some wine crackers. Got six at $19.99, need to put some in the back of the EuroCave and wait five years to see what happens. Unique wine, lots of fun to rate!

Comments (5)

Hayman & Hill Meritage Reserve Selection 2006
Rated by Zippy on October 14, 2010

Rating 44

Not sure what to expect from a Meritage wine priced at $7.99. The nose was light with hints of raspberries and dark cherry. Smooth dry tannins with just a slight grip. Just a touch of oak and a restrained 13.5% alcohol. The blend is unique as well and the high % of Malbec shows through. I really enjoyed it, and lets face it, at $7.99 it made it a lot more palatable.

Geyser Peak Meritage Reserve Alexandre 2005
Rated by Zippy on October 8, 2010

Rating 44-

Great color, intense nose. Thought fruit would jump out, but it proved soft with hints of dark fruit. Found it a bit hot, not sure of the alcohol content, but it did not blow off after a 30 minute decant. A solid red blend and a good value at $17.99

Sebastiani Secolo Proprietor's Selection 2006
Rated by Zippy on August 28, 2010

Nose of vanilla, oak, and black fruit. Leather with a hint of tobacco. Firm tannins but not offensive. Will get better with a couple of years but hey .... why wait.

Rizzi Barbaresco 2006
Rated by Zippy on July 30, 2010

Rating 33-

Found it very light in color and body. Not even a hint of staining on the bottom of the cork. Floral aromas of rose and light red fruit. Surprisingly dry and tannic. Not my favorite, but not disappointing.

Atalon Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2004
Rated by Zippy on April 30, 2010

Rating 44-

Light to medium bodied, simple oak with a reasonable alcohol content. A smooth drinking red with nice tannins. Not a show stopper, but a fairly complex Napa Cab for $24.99.

Bacio Divino Pazzo Napa Valley 2006
Rated by Zippy on March 30, 2010

Rating 33-

Spicy & peppery but easy drinking. Reminded me of a light Zin blend. Not a bad red blend, but at $17.99 there are a lot of better choices.

B Cellars Blend 25 Napa Valley 2005
Rated by Zippy on March 30, 2010

Rating 44+

The difficult Cab/Syrah blend is done very well here. Hints of vanilla, light tannins. Opened up and became much more smooth after decanting. A hint of pepper and fruit on the back end. Light sediment stuck to the cork.

Vine Cliff Cabernet Sauvignon Rock Block Napa Valley 2006

Buil & Gine Priorat Gine Gine 2006

Light bodied for a Priorat. A good deal at $9. Will use as a party wine during the summer. No point in trying to find too much in this.

Chateau Teyssier Saint-Emilion 2004
Rated by Zippy on March 11, 2010

Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Bella Oaks Napa Valley 1998
Rated by Zippy on May 1, 2009

Rating 44

When opened, a strong minerality was evident. Green bell pepper with complex fruit and spice. The next day it seemed to soften, tannins relaxed and the fruit faded a bit. Great mouthfeel, silky and smooth. Interesting flavors and structure.

Peachy Canyon Cirque Du Vin Paso Robles 2006
Rated by Zippy on April 24, 2009

Rating 33+

A great stand alone wine. Dry with typical big red fruit flavors. 50% Cab, Petite Sirah, Merlot, Syrah,Cab Franc from Paso Robles. Burgers on the grill, pizza, a nice steak salad, or wild salmon topped with bruschetta would complement this easy to drink red. At $9.99, it's a great wine to bring to a party or to introduce big reds to white wine drinkers.

Engelbrecht Els Vineyards Proprietor's Blend South Africa 2006
Rated by Zippy on April 12, 2009

A well made Stellenbosch wine with a 60% Cab base. Tight and tannic, this wine is still a little young and slightly hot at 15.1% Oak nose with plum and berries. Will age well and improve in 3-5 years.

Miner Family Oracle Napa Valley 2003
Rated by Zippy on January 10, 2009

Rating 55+

Deep ruby in color, almost inky. A very smooth mouthfeel, silky. Tannins are very evident but light. A little bit of pepper. You can taste the oak, but it mellows with exposure. The flavor fills your mouth and lingers. A truly elegant wine. An absolute steal for the clearance price of $19.99
