DeLille Cellars D2 Red Columbia Valley 2013
Rated by J2K on August 13, 2017

Rating 44

Back label touts a Bordeaux. cab, merlot, cab franc Spice and alcohol- on opening. Decanted one hour, still hot. 2nd hour starting to smooth out, still has spice and more vanilla than expected from French oak. Bigger than Bordeaux with 14.3% alc and more vanilla. Strong from the cab with flavs of tobacco, black currant, pepper but rounded fruit and soft tannins from the merlot. I don't know what the Cab Franc is doing. If Bordeaux than its more right bank. But hits for a Washington state Bdx blend. Like Andrew Will, which is a good thing, but for bdx freaks, too much alc. After 3 hours alc fades or I just don't mind anymore but it's silky smooth. This is their second wine, similar to what the big Bdx houses do, I'd like to taste the their first wine. On wine searcher prices start @ $41 so it's a great buy for $26 if you're into it. Which as I've almost consumed the entire bottle, I think I am into it, literally.

Agree with the Wharfster. Good buy but give at least 3 hour decant if you can hold out

Arnoux et Fils Cotes du Rhone Villages Plan de Dieu Eglise du Midi 2014
Rated by J2K on October 9, 2016

Rating 33+

This is an excellent Cotes Du Rhone Villages and QPR for $9. Especially compared to all the standard items for the same price or more. You need a house wine for the holidays? This is your boy right here. A lot better with at least an hour of air. Plus, the label is a lovely old school, kinda gothic style calligraphy, looks a lot fancier than the price.

Chateau St. Jean Chardonnay Belle Terre Vineyard 2013
Rated by J2K on October 7, 2016

Rating 33+

Well its getting closer to wood burning season and this Cali Chard has plenty of oak for your fire pit. Luckily I was in the mood for some chopping and butter popcorn. Did have touch of minerality and decent overall balance for this style.

Cantina Tudernum Montefalco Sagrantino 2008
Rated by J2K on August 15, 2016

Rating 55-

Wow, softens you up with a little red fruit and spice then leaves you with a beastly tannic assault to chew on before swallowing. Even after decanting for 5 hours. A 2008 and still young. Will be interesting to see how it develops and at the price, I'm willing to buy a couple more to find out. Although, I enjoy the gritty tannin now.

Tierra y Mar Chardonnay La Riviere Russian River Valley 2014
Rated by J2K on June 5, 2016

Rating 33+

I didn't remember buying this but saw it on the rack and a hot Friday afternoon seemed to fit. It's got some Cali RRV oak and vanilla but well balanced with a nice lingering finish which adds some extra flavors, especially after breathing for a little while. I'm buying more. You could pay a lot more for a RRV chard but why? I can't remember what commercial that line was from. "Are you ready for the summer?" I do remember that song from the first Meatballs movie.

Tua Rita Perlato del Bosco Sangiovese Tuscany 2012
Rated by J2K on April 3, 2016

Rating 44

decanted 3 hours--Good cherry flavor, some earthiness, tobacco, slight vanilla, good structure, something a little different in this Sangiovese but in a good way. Another good buy

Maculan Cabernet Sauvignon Palazzotto Veneto 2011
Rated by J2K on February 28, 2016

Has some good can flavors but oomph is gone, soft tannin. Could of passed for an aged old world cab, without the complexity.

Flegenheimer Bros Paisant Red McLaren Vale 2013
Rated by J2K on February 13, 2016

Rating 33

Surprised by this wine; when I see a Grenache Syrah blend from Australia I'm thinking big, fruit, jammy. This wine is light in color and weight, with pure red berry flavors. At times reminded me of a Washington state Syrah with is clarity. A little light on the acidity but a decent wine overall and a name you probably wouldn't associate with a winery.

Gerard Bertrand Cotes du Roussillon Grand Terroir Les Apres 2011
Rated by J2K on February 13, 2016

Rating 33+

Give this one at least an hour to breathe. Black cherry, raspberry, charcoal, some mocha/chocolate. Kinda soft and sultry. For $12.99 I'mm digging it especially for a house wine, plus I like the label. I'll buy more.

Dezzani Starde Barbaresco 2011
Rated by J2K on January 2, 2016

My bottle had major band-aid aroma. Strong tannins, good acidity which means it had some time to develop. Seemed like some decent fruit behind it all but couldn't really get through the band-aid action

Casey Flat Ranch CFR 2012
Rated by J2K on January 2, 2016

Rating 44

Oh yeah, Syrah and Cab blend, but they had me at Syrah. Decanted 2 hours. 14.8% alc and noticeable. Full bodied, powerful, darker fruits, firm and gritty tannins, accents of fruit from both grapes, with plenty of wood. I'll by more for those upcoming long cold winter nights.........daytime will work too.

Artiga Mas Delmera Reserva 2009
Rated by J2K on December 13, 2015

Rating 33+

Needed just a little time to breathe. Starts with some black cherry/raspberry but quickly to chocolate, mocha, charcoal cherry, maybe even some nutty vanilla. It's very smooth on the palate with soft tannins but works well for the $11.99 price. I think I found my Holiday party red wine. Back label says it's a great "evening tipple." I just thought that sounds funny.

Hogue Cellars Merlot Reserve 2012
Rated by J2K on November 21, 2015

Rating 33-

Blackberry rounded fruit with a lot of wood, subtle tannins. Its okay for a $16 Merlot, slightly better than the mass produced, knee height merlot's. There was a Hogue CS many years ago that was a great buy. I was thinking this was the same with an updated label, maybe not

Clarendon Hills Syrah Brookman 2008
Rated by J2K on November 21, 2015

Rating 44-

Heavy full bodied mouthfeel, gobs of fruit, skittles, and even a hint of Syrah! Could be better with a little more acidity. But its good for this style and with the new price reduction, even better compared to the avg price on wine-searcher of $63. Drink this last, your palate may not recover for another wine. 3+ for the wine and 4- for price

Domaine Monpertuis Chateauneuf du Pape 2011
Rated by J2K on October 25, 2015

Rating 33

CdP goes so well with the fall weather. So had to give this CS a try. Suprisingly lighter in color and body and overall disapointed. Nothing terrible but just seemed flat and missing the acidity, herb, spice, and plum balance expected. Although there was more fruit than expected. There is the well known theory that CdP's can "shut down" or go into a "dumb phase". Never been a fan of that theory....BUT, could be the case here although 2011 was a slightly above average vintage (91 WS). I drank a 2004 Domaine Montpertuis CdP in 2009. No, I don't have excellent wine geek memory, I checked my CT notes. Anyway, I loved the 2004, tho it was slightly better vintage, and I drank it 5 years after vintage. So maybe this just needs a litttle more time to open up out of the "dumb/shut down" phase. Hopefully so, $30 is a good price for a CdP, but there is some risk on this one evolving

Stonestreet Chardonnay Bear Point Vineyard 2012
Rated by J2K on August 19, 2015

Rating 55-

Big Cali chard, oak n butter nose and palate, lots of white fruit with some butterscotch, maybe caramel, good acidity which leads to a long finish, Its a power chard heavyweight! I'm a heavyweight too so I was a formidable opponent and a good match. I also drank this on a sunny day at the beach watching the waves roll up which also contributed to my enjoyment. Just like I'm doing now as I write this.......

Chateau L'Ermitage Costieres de Nîmes Cuvee Reserve 2012
Rated by J2K on July 25, 2015

Rating 33+

Southern Rhone wine from appellation way down near the sea-Costieres de Nîmes. 50% Syrah 50% Mouvedre. Floral with darker fruits and spice along with some herbal elements. Maybe a bit of mineral from the Mediterranean sea. Good structure. If you like Gigondas and hint herb for $11, go for it.

Quinta do Portal Grande Reserva 2007
Rated by J2K on July 25, 2015

Rating 33

Was hoping for a winner here after reading the WA-94 and WE-93 reviews. I decanted for 3 hours but it didn't really need it. Soft tannins, smooth texture, some bold fruit but not rich or complex, low acidity, and short finish. Of course there could be some bottle variation. WA said to drink through 2027!! I don't see that happening as I thought it was ready now. WE wrote in 2011 to drink over next 5-6 years. I usually don't agree with WE but I think they got it right.

Boom! Haven't had on of those Aussie bombs in a while. Lush, full bodied, with gobs of dark fruit, sweet tarts, raisins, low tannin. Typical Aussie but a quality wine for $12.99, I'll pick up a few more. Give it some air

Clos LaChance Syrah Estate 2013
Rated by J2K on May 13, 2015

Agree with Wharf- Big fruit, black cherry with the vanilla oak adding some sweetness along with the leather. Not an elegant wine but good when you need "a drink". I need them often so at $11.99, I bought a few more bottles

Les Cretes Chardonnay Valle d'Aosta 2011
Rated by J2K on May 2, 2015

Rating 44+

Nice Chard from Northwest Italy from an area called Valle D'Aosta which is very close to Burgundy. Gave about an hour to breathe, this wine has some nice wet stone and mineral quality especially on the finish, racy but with good texture, lemon, melon fruit with a touch of almond and good balance. This just dropped down to $20 from $25 and bought 4 more.

Balius Wines Cabernet Sauvignon Kylie's Cuvee 2012
Rated by J2K on March 29, 2015

Rating 44

Smells like cherry twirlers. Flavors of rich black cherry with sweet vanilla along with some spice and leather, good acidity, creamy vanilla finish. This wine is pretty good for $20, definitely Cali cab with the vanilla, not too much oak but more black cherry Life-Saver sweetness. As a 2012 I think it's and early drinker. May bump this up to 4+

Domaine La Croix d'Aline Saint-Chinian 2013
Rated by J2K on February 19, 2015

Rating 33+

Decanted 2 hours, medium bodied, lots of mineral and rock with good acidity and just enough fruit, clean and pure, perfumey finish, prob different then what you'd expect from Syrah and Grenache blend but I enjoyed it and would buy more.

Vineyards Found Cabernet Franc 2012
Rated by J2K on February 1, 2015

Rating 55-

I've enjoyed the other Vineyard Found wines so I had to try this one. Decanted 2 hours. Smells of cocoa or caramel. Immediate smooth mouthfeel, with lots of chocolate/mocha/cocoa, dark fruit, black cherry and some vanilla. The acidity hits after and really brings this wine together with some zing and good lingering finish.

Cultivate The Feast 2010
Rated by J2K on December 13, 2014

I'm with DonTime on this one. I think $8-$10 is about right. Good enough for the holiday parties when people don't pay too much attention to the wine. Given the previous reviews, I already stocked up on this wine for the Holidays.

Santa Rita Pehuen Carmenere 2008
Rated by J2K on December 13, 2014

Rating 33

I purchased a bottle on Wednesday, PNP, had that very strong Chilean gasoline aroma and flavor. Decanted for a few hours with some vigorous swirls, still didn't blow off. Trying to get past the petrol it was still undrinkable, considered flawed. Exchanged for another bottle on Thursday. Popped on Friday, no gasoline. Gave a 2 hour decant. Cherry and charcoal nose, palate is medium bodied with earthy/dirt, dusty, more cherry and charcoal, with touch of chocolate, good acidity. Finishes with a little stewed tomato. It's a decent wine if you like Carmenere, but it doesn't really float my boat.

Shannon Ridge Petite Sirah Caldwell Ranch 2010
Rated by J2K on November 20, 2014

Rating 44-

Full bodied, lush, with lots of dark fruit, with some pepper and spice. Pretty good balance and decent petite sirah for the price. I know a lot of people that don't like petite sirah or have never tried it. The fruit on this one may be a little gobby, but not over the top. The pepper and tannins give it a nice grip finish. Again, for the price its a good buy. And if you havn't had PS or its been a while, I say give it a shot. Btw... a decant never hurt anyone.

Two Hands Shiraz Bella's Garden 2011
Rated by J2K on October 27, 2014

Rating 44-

I've enjoyed many previous vintages 04-07 of this wine. But I stopped buying as the price increased with the hype. Gave this @ 3 hours decant. Mixed red and blue fruit, good acidity, jammy but not over the top jammy, more balanced and restrained then expected. A good wine, but not as good as those previous vintages and probably not a shocker as 2011 was a bad weather year down under in Aussie land. Although my Sheila enjoyed it and the CS price is the lowest anywhere.

Maquis Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
Rated by J2K on October 14, 2014

Rating 33-

Drank this one night after the Erasmo Cab which wasn't good for this wine. The next night I drank this wine first. It was better but didn't excite me, one dimensional, okay for 12.99 but at that price, the Erasmo was much better.

Comments (2)

Erasmo Maule Valley Chile 2009
Rated by J2K on October 14, 2014

Rating 55-

I'm with Tonystro on this one. Bought 2 then bought a case. Give an hour decant, good structure and balance, blend of Cab, Merlot, and Cab Franc, does have a little creamy vanilla which gives some sweetness on the finish, quite tasty, extra nod for the price, this wine is $24-$28 on Wine Searcher.

Antonin Rodet Givry 1er Cru 2011
Rated by J2K on September 28, 2014

Rating 33+

I took a shot. Realizing this is a young wine, I popped it early in the day planning on a long decant. Of course gave an immediate taste-very acidic but not flawed. It really took about 8 hours to open up resulting in a good but not great wine with some funk and cherry, the flavors and character you'd expect from red Burg. I'll prob pick up a couple more to store in the Chez 2K cellar for a few years. At $19 and a little aging, you'll be da man pulling this premier Cru out of the cellar for the guests.

Vineyards Found Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
Rated by J2K on August 7, 2014

Rating 44

Second round of Vineyards Found!! Although this 2011 is much younger than the 07 previously offered. Thats why it needed @ 4 hours of decanting to really open up. If you liked the 07, the 2011 is very similar, straight up Napa cab, but $2 more and prob needs @ 3 years in storage.

Brady Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
Rated by J2K on August 3, 2014

Rating 44

Decanted one hour, lots of vanilla with black currant, and some spice. Nice Paso Robles cabernet from an excellent vintage. Good tannic structure and acidity. There's no mistaking the Cali cab character here, it just not Napa, but could be. Not that much depth, mostly vanilla/oak, (in French barrels for 18 months) but a very good buy at $16- Picking up more.

Dierberg Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley 2010
Rated by J2K on August 1, 2014

Rating 22+

Very harsh and strong on opening, dark color, more black fruit than a typical Cali Pinot with some tobacco and ash, needed about 2 hours to really open then the fruit lightened up a bit, picked up some cola action, charcoal, medium acidity low tannin, smooth palate, I like Pinots that don't really taste like Pinot, this one started like a dark brooding force and ended.......a kinda weird off Pinot.

Oh yeah, big fruit, red berry and black fruit jammy, creamy, ends with something darker like mocha or espresso? Good balance, if you're down with that stereotypical Aussie shiraz then you'll be down with Henry. Plenty of life so give some time to breathe.

UNP (Unscrewed and poured)- always intrigued by these Carini wines. Was turned off by the last Carini Chairmans but for $20 on a rough Friday- I'm ready for anything. NV blend of Petite Sirah, Merlot, Cab Sauv. First hour- nope! Second hour- getting better but not there yet. 3-4 hours- soft mouthfeel, lots of fresh baked cherry and blueberry pie flavors with a little spice and anise. Medium finish, with kinda gritty tannin. Label says its unfiltered and unrefined.....just like a PA Wine Talk tasting.

Koehler Quartette Red Santa Ynez Valley 2010
Rated by J2K on February 7, 2014

4 grape blend of Cab, Syrah, Sangiovese, grenache. Similar to the Koehler Cab lighter mouthfeel and flavor. Maybe because its mostly cab from Santa Ynez. But also some plum, little tobacco, smoke and tea. Thought it was an interesting blend but the product didn't really deliver for me. Prob prefer it to the cab though.

Had the 04 a few years ago and really enjoyed it so I had to try this vintage. Unfortunately, not as good. Decanted 2 hours, little vanilla but seemed light on cab fruit, maybe more plum but still bland with a bit of tobacco. Decent acidity and medium tannins but just not in harmony like expected.

Biondi-Santi Brunello di Montalcino Annata 2004
Rated by J2K on November 21, 2013

Rating 44+

This one was a lot better than the 2000 as expected with a much better vintage. Red fruit, earth, good acidity and tannins which will produce a nice structure after more cellar time or lots of breathing if popped now.. That wine-searcher avg price is pretty high. Anyone want to buy my other bottle for $200? That's a bargain!!!

Hmm, was expecting good things from this wine but it didn't happen. Too much fruit, vanilla, oak. Seemed flabby and the fruit had a tinge of that artificial flavor. Novy Syrah Napa Valley 2010
Rated by J2K on November 7, 2013

Rating 44-

I've enjoyed the Novy Gary's Vineyard Syrah before so I wanted to try this one. It did not disappoint. Full and rich mouthfeel. Ripe dark fruit, plum, with some of meat, iron and touch of vanilla sweetness. Sometimes tasting like a Northern Rhone. Not overly complex but a very good Syrah for $15, just give it some time to breathe. It held up strong on day 2 also. I'm buying more.

Biondi-Santi Brunello di Montalcino Annata 2000
Rated by J2K on October 26, 2013

Rating 33+

I actually bought 2 bottles. Opened the second after M2K took a whiff and confirmed its musty corkiness. The second bottle was also funky on opening but not corked. Even after a few hours some funk blew off but never produced a nice aroma. Color shows signs of age, palate is smooth, cherry, little leather and licorice. Low tannin, acidity ok. Finish did linger and added some earthiness. Didn't really wow me in any way. I think this wine is at peak or near end of drinking window. That would probably match the vintage rating of 88. If you like a little age on your wines, it may be for you. As Kenny Rogers sang, "You gotta know when to hold'em". I suggest, you don't be the "Coward of the County" and drink up.

Hecht & Bannier Cotes du Roussillon Villages 2010
Rated by J2K on October 9, 2013

Rating 44

Decanted 2 hours-- Very nice wine from southern France. Blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mouvedre. Smooth, creamy on the palate, black and red berry mix, with some chalky stone, and spice. Good acidity, balance, and finish. Same blend as southern Rhone although not as complex. Some of you anti-old world people may want to give it a try. The smooth, creamy palate and unearthliness (is that a word?) may suit your palate. Good value at $16 (extra bump in score), avg on Wine-Searcher is $25. -The only negative is that the label is kind of lame. So I'll stock up and serve from the decanter. PS- WA gave it 91-92+......if that means anything to you or yinz....

This winery often produces decent inexpensive wines without that cheap artificial flavor. All merlot from the northwest, more acidic and tannic then the full round fruit I expected. Not much depth but a good daily drinker $10 wine thats hard to beat for the price. Better on day 2.

High alcohol on nose and palate. I let this baby breathe for 8 hours, still medicinal. Smooth with some rounded fruit emerging from the merlot but also some mint or greenness maybe from the Cab Franc. Bit of cedar, tobacco, and tannic grip give hints of Bordeaux but the stinging alcohol won't give way. I know its young but I'm not willing to wait for this one.

Didn't see many of these around. A decent cab for the price. Smooth, low acidity, typical cab flavors, with lots of wood, some chocolate on the finish. It's 13.5% alc but you get plenty on the nose and palate which throws off the balance. No need to hold, drink now.

Strong nose of band-aid and dirt, perfumery. Tastes of greenness, sweet tarts, fig, slight plum, very tart, lots of acidity and tannins. Kind of a strange flavor collectively. Day 2 it opened a little, got smoother, easier to drink with a more fruit coming through. But still green and tart. Not sure how if this will evolve.

Deep Sea Red 2008

Upon openingm nose is big fruit aroma with alcohol (14.9%). Description from winemaker says "fresh bread aroma"? Initial taste is full body, big jammy fruit, ow acidity and smooth mouthfeel. Some sweet dark fruit, syrah meat, vanilla, little tannic grip on the finish. 74% syrah which stands out plus 4 other grapes. After a few hours its much better, the alcohol blows off and you get more iron and cola flavors. It may be to jammy or fruity for some but give it some air time, I'm digging it, and the price too!

Rated by J2K on December 2, 2012

Rating 33-

It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. I was looking forward to trying this wine as I've heard good things about Cougar Crest in the past. I purchased bottle-- thin, tart, sour, low acidity. After three hours hints of a decent syrah but no depth or complexity. A few days later the Monroeville store was pouring it for a tasting- full bodied, pepper, oaky. I'm down with that so I purchase another bottle. Get home, pop it, this bottle was the median of the first two tastings which was decent but not $25 Washington Syrah worth. Bottle variation? I'm done, i'll give the average score of the three.

This wine is for Mark! Steve Pollack says, "its a cab drinkers Merlot". I thought it had some hints of Cabernet flavors but lacked the body and structure of a Napa Cab. Decanted for 2 hours, cherry and vanilla nose, some red fruits initially, turning to cedar, vanilla/oak, and maybe some leather and tea all mixed up. Slight tannins on the finish. I enjoyed the flavors but the body was light and watery at times which made it lack some structure and intensity.

Poured it in the decanter @ 5:30pm and stole a sip. It was totally out of whack; high alcohol, disjointed, rough, overripe dark, sour fruit.@9:30pm poured in the glass. Nose is overwhelming alcohol (14.9%) with touch of vanilla and fig. Palate is overripe dark fruit, licorice, and high alcohol- has a burned rubber or charred flavor that turns bitter and sour on the finish. Low acidity and tannins. At this point I realize this wine is not good and open a different bottle. After 6 hours open I go back to the Pina. Some of the earlier nasty flavors have released. Now it has a smooth mouthfeel with low acidity and subtle tannins and taste like high alcohol cherry cough medicine. On day 2 (which rarely happens at Chez 2K) its more of the same. Considering the current characteristics of this wine, I dont see it getting better with age.

The more I drank it, the more I liked it........which usually happens after a few glasses.

Full bodied, smooth mouthfeel with mix of red and dark berries, some vanilla sweetness initially but pepper and oak on the finish. Decent acidity and subtle tannins. Similiar to a CDP or Gigondas. Good value for $15. This may be the first "Biodynamic" wine I have enjoyed. More like a new world syrah, probably why they print "Syrah" on the label for Americans. You dont see that often from south French wines, mostly just inexpensive Burgs (print Pinot). Wonder if they sell it in France like that. Update: just checked wine-searcher. There is a shop in France showing same label and selling it for $24US.

First, I agree with most of the notes written by others. Secondly, (FWIW) the g/f and I purchased a bottle of 04 and 05. We tasted blind and drank them over an hour, giving time to breathe. The final result, maybe it was the extra year of ageing but we both preferred the 04. If you like this style wine, I wouldnt go crazy trying to obtain the 05 just because of WS. If you plan on buying some (or more), I would suggest this experiment for yourself. Especially since they are both the same price. Furthermore, if you like this aussie style, I suggest giving the Chateau Tanunda a try. You get a full bottle for $15.99 Item 20038

From the first sniff, you know the style of this wine. Big, creamy fruit nose with some wood. Full body, very smooth mouthfeel, clean, nice mix of red and dark fruit, creamy, then ends with some pepper, spice, along with vanilla and wood. Low tannins and some acidity helps on the finish. Its high alcohol. I would drink this on its own, as its a big wine. I drank most without food, when I had a bite it tasted like whiskey.

Cherry, wood, and maybe some tobacco aroma's. Medium bodied, more cherry and charcoal on the palate with some earthiness, very nice acidty. Decent wine overall for a Cru Bourgeois bordeaux just don't expect the rich concentated higher end bordeaux. This would be a versatile food wine to match plenty of dishes at a good price.

Deanted one hour. Nose is big but mostly alcohol (14.8%) but not so much on the palate. Full bodied big wine, smooth, semi sweet, with dark fruit, some chocalate, maybe a little tobacco. Some acidity comes through at the finish along with subtle tannins. Overall, a big smooth wine, not complex, with a short finish. It's a decent buy for $20 but not really a CS bargain though as $20 seems to be the avg price.

Back label suggests decanting which I did for 2-3 hours. Took a quick sip first and got lots of cherry and acidity. After decanting, nose is rich of sweet dark fruit and mint. Smooth on the palate, this is 60% sangiovese and 40% Cab but you get mostly cab flavors coming through. Its all old world cab, rich and concentrated fruit with leather, tobacco, cedar, and mint. Sort of aged Bordeaux-ish. Finishes with good acidity and chewy tannins. Once this opens up, the flavors are strong, its a sipper as you won't be able to drink it fast. Btw...the first bottle I bought was corked. Returned it and grabbed this second bottle from a diferent case.

Poured this in the decanter and took a whiff. Whoa!! Powerful but with alcohol, gasoline smells. I checked the label-13% alc. Hmmmm, let it air for an hour. Some of it blew off but the taste wasn't much better. I'll give it another hour. Opened a 2006 Anderson Conn Valley for a back up. Went back to this wine, aroma's had blown off but the wine just wasn't good. Flat, no acidty and bad fruit. Even with some age I don't see this getting better. MAybe I had a bad bottle but good thing I opened the Anderson Conn Valley, always a pleasure.

Decanted one hour. A solid Napa cab at a good price. Typical vanilla oak nose, good fruit oak balance, with nice acidity and tannins for structure to follow through. The finish could be a little longer but otherwise, a great buy for this style. Especiailly when you compare prices on wine-searcher of avg $56. I'll be buying more. Btw... I kept wanting to call this wine "Caligula". Anyone remember that movie?

Decanted one hour. At first, strong nose but seemed off or vegetal. The palate was solid though, good dark fruit, oak, tannic grip. As it breathed, it became more complex, developing more flavors of cassis, cedar, sweet tobacco, and menthol. I compared this alongside the Coniglio. Both are fantastic wines and a great buy for $20. I like the Vezer better as it gets more complex with flavors and a longer finish where the Conigolo is straight up Cali fruit/oak all the way through. Btw.....the winery sells it for $60 a bottle. Doh!

Had this at the statewide tasting and thought it was decent but that was after 15 other wines. This time I drank it solo. A little vanilla, oak nose. Not getting much fruit on the palate, just a little dark fruit with a lot of acidity, then bitter tannins dominate the finish. Not very pleasant, disjointed, and given its age i don't see it coming together. I'll be spending my next $30 on something else.

Decanted 2 hours. Black Cherry fruit, alcohol present. Full body, smooth on the palate, dark fruit and tobacco, the bordeax style and influence is recognizable. The finish is chalky with gritty tannins. There's something missing in the middle, like it skips a beat in the tasting experience. It's a decent wine and I like the style but maybe a different vintage would be more complete.

Blackberry and pepper nose,. Dark fruit, game, meat, good tannic structure. The finish is strange to me, liked burned rubber, which turned me off a bit. This wine is a formidable opponent to take over "Value of the Year" away from the Hogue Genesis Merlot. A different style then the big sweet vanilla Genesis, this is an Old World wine. Black Cherry nose with some band-aid. Smooth as it hits the palate, tobacco, leather, and cherry fruit, good acidity and tannins on the finish. A litle bordeaux-ish. Not the best wine of the year but a fantastic value at $8! If you like this style, stock up now for those upcoming Holiday parties. There is a wine store in Washington DC selling this for $20 a bottle.

I don't understand why there are not more Cab Franc wines produced, I'm a fan of the grape. I let this breathe for 2 hours before drinking. There is some alcohol on the nose but also vanilla spiced fruit. Medium bodied, palate is blueberry and creamy vanilla with some cedar, black cherry and spice on the finish. I love a good tannic grip and even after 5 hours I'm enjoying the chewy finish on this wine which is lingering. Drink now or hold but give it at least an hour before tanking. Slightly less body and intensity then a Cali cab but I like this wine and will buy more for an Andrew Jackson.

This neede a couple of hours for the aroma's to really shine and I agree with the Big Red on the mineral, tea, and plum. Light to medium bodied with good acidity, decent tannic grip and balance. Mixed fruit flavors lead to a more mineral finish and slighty gamey. A well made wine and similiar to the 07 R Wines Skulls with more minerality. I'm still not fan of dominant Grenache wines, not sure why I keep buying them. But a decent score for a well made wine, a good food wine, just give it some time to open up.

Very strong nose, black cherry, vanilla, maybe something medicinal/alcohol, but I like the aromas. Needs some time to breathe for the acidity to surface. Strong rich flavors on the palate, full bodied, more bright cherry, vanilla, some tartness on the finish along with a srange aftertaste that I'm not sure how to describe. There's defintely a lot going on here for $10, strong and rich flavors but just don't like the tart finish and like the aroma better than the taste. I don't think it's First Class but I'd accept a free upgrade.

When I open a Cali Chard there are expectations and this wine meets them. From the first sniff and sip there is plenty of oak and vanilla present. Tropical fruit flavors with a creamy butter mouthfeel. On the second glass it seemed to open a bit more giving some butterscotch flavor on the finish. May lack a little acidity but I enjoyed this wine and the PA sale price of $20 makes it a great buy as it usually goes for $30 and up. Just have the right expectations...

An Aussie wine that's 80% Shiraz for $25.99. Don't expect the big fruity, creamy flavors of some other big Aussie bombs. Even though it's only 20% grenache, it seems to have more Grenache characteristics then shiraz. The nose is decent but it's medium bodied with low acidity and just not that enjoyable on the palate, even after being opened for 3 hours. PNP, kind of strange nose of dirt and candy apple. After one hour opening up, flavors of sweet cherry, chocolate, some mint or menthol finishing with a hard candy flavor. Not over oaked and actually has some earthiness. There is good acidity and tannins but they're slightly out of balance and outwhelm the fruit a bit. Seems to be a lingering taste that's sort of metallic. Drank over 3 hours and enjoyed it but I'm thinking a little more cellar time would balance this out more. I had the the 1998 and this is surely a better wine. For some reason even though I don't have anymore bottles, I'm cheering for its improvement.

This meritage/bordeaux blend is Cab Sav/Merlot/Cab Franc/Petit Verdot. I usually don't pay much attention to the color of the wine but I couldn't help notice how light this wine, considering the grapes. It looked much more like a pinot noir. I PNP and took a sip, it wasn't looking promising so I left it alone. After 1-2 hours it started to open up, dry, lot of black cherry, red fruit. Also gained some acidity and tannic grip, although short lived which resulted in a limited finish. I think it's priced right $9-$12 and the bottle looks nice so it would be a party crowd pleaser. I still can't get over how light it is.

Nice fruity nose with just a touch of petrol. Acidity is great in this wine. Fuller body then I expected, good peach and sweet fruit flavors, a well balanced Riesling which leaves a lingering finish. I went all Deustchland and drank this grilled bratwurst!!

Dark fruit & spice on the nose with some vanilla. Palate continues with dark fruit and some vanilla but very well balanced. Excellent acidity brings a lingering rich concentrated finish but a little gritty. Also some blackberry, tobacco, spice. I think this is a great Napa cab for $28 with lots of life left.

Good fruit and oak aroma's. Full bodied, butter, good balance of oak, lots of apple, pear, flavors and light acidity but pretty good lingering finish. Overall, I think this is a great value at $15 for a Cali Chard and I'll be buying more.

I've always thought this wine was a great value in past vintages. While I didn't think the 2006 was as good as other vintages, it's still a great value at $9. It has lots of vanilla, big red fruit, and some spice but also has a touch of flabbiness and artificial flavor. It's still a good value and I'll be buying more for daily drinkers.

: Decanted one hour. Aroma of sweet spice and dark fruit. Full bodied, low tannins, acidity shows well on the finish. This wine is full of dark fruit, some earth and spice, and sweeter than I expected. Labled as a bordeaux blend but I thought it had more syrah/shiraz characteristics. Really opened up afer 2 hours.

Decanted 1 hour. Vanilla nose. Full bodied with smooth mouthfeel. Some good fruit showing with vanilla/oak. Finishes with decent acidity and light tannins. The vanilla/oak makes a comeback on the aftertaste. I was hoping for a blockbuster napa cab at a great price. This wine is pretty good but doesn't have the concentrated fruit or intenisty I was hoping for. I think it's priced right at $18. Drink now.

The first bottle I drank of this wine I was intrigued. There was some bordeaux type funk, band-aid and cherry flavors with good acidity. Either I was in another dimension or there is drastic bottle variation because the second time I drank it there was pomengrate and spice aromas, low acidity, light color and body, with sweet cherry flavors ans sugary finish. Rating based off second bottle, but the label is cool.

Decanted one hour. Nose of alcohol, rubber and tar. This wine was off from the start. Full bodied, smooth mouthfeel, but dark fruit flavors are overripe, or overcooked(?),and bitter. After three hours, some decent tannins on the finish but overall, still not very pleasurable and I dont see this wine ageing very well.

Decanted one hour drank over next two--nose of burned rubber, spices and some band-aid. Tastes of dark fruit with lots of pepper. Full bodied but low acidity and slight tannins. There's a blunt force of powerful concentrated fruit, kind of Bordeaux-ish but without the acidity and tannins it come across flat and flabby. Finish lingers but I'm not sure I like the flavors. Drink now as I don't see it ageing.

At first it was kinda flabby with low acidity but opened up later. Medium bodied, nose of red fruit and spice. Tastes of red fruit, red beets, some leather and smoke. This was an interesting wine as my opinion kept changing. First I just thought it was okay, then I started liking it, then it went to a standard okay $12 wine. Decant at least one hour.

Rated by J2K on December 6, 2009

Rating 55

Decanted two hours, considering the aged barrel time (65 months) I thought it may be overoaked but it wasnt. Big, full bodied, rich concentrated fruit, mostly dark fruit, with cedar and some spice. More dark and ripe then oaky. Acidity is fantastic and gripping tannins pull it all together for a long, long finish. This wine is powerful and heavy duty although the fruit may be considered over ripe for some people. I liked it most after 2-3 hours. New flavors continued to evolve in this wine and later on seemed to give more port like flavors. This is a sip & savour wine with plenty of life left.

Decanted 2 hours. Powerful nose of dark fruits, with a slight vegetal hint. Full body, very strong and concentrated fruit blackberry, cassis, plum, blackcurrant. Good balance of acidity and some powdery tannins. Finish is long with some tobacco coming through. Overall oustanding rich cab flavors and not over oaked. This wine is still young and could easily rest for a few more years. Although it did seem to peak at 4 hours open.

Decanted two hours. Not much on the nose. On the palate had some faint dark fruit flavors but all hidden beneath a lot of bitter tannins and acidity. Some casis and other cab flavors trying to come through after three hours. Maybe I had a bad bottle or it was just too young but I have some doubts, not much backbone or structure.

Smooth body with light tannins and short finish. Overall this is a good bordeaux for $13. It won't knock your socks off with concentrated fruit, acidity, and lingering finish but gives quality for the price that old world fans will like.

Decanted 2 hours. Vanilla and cream nose with dark fruit, on the palate its so big and strong of sweet dark fruit, blackberry, cream, pepper and spice with a little leather. Great acidity and balance, long lingering finish. When I drink these kind of wines I always start by saying "oh another Aussie fruit bomb" but a few sips later, "it's so good!!!" But definitely a style that old world fans would not enjoy. Although it's fantastic, considering the sweetness, I couldn't drink it all night, it's like a dessert in itself.

Big,juicy, sweet, good mix of red and dark fruit flavors. Nice acidity and lingering finish. It's typical for a big fruity Aussie shiraz. If you like that style you'll really enjoy this wine. Old World fans will think it's over the top, definitly more of a personal style. Good to sip on it's own because of the sweetness. If you got it on the PLCB sale for $15, it's a steal.

PNP, really hot initially, needs at least an hour for heat to blow off. Flavors start with lush strawberry and red fruit flavors, a little sweet at first but follows with intense black cherry, good aciidty, and great tanninc structure. Outstanding wine, reminds me of the Au Bon Climat Santa Barbara PN. For what Pinot's cost, this is a fantastic QPR as currently available for $18.

Needs at least 1-2 hours to open up. Mostly one dimensional , dark berry and slight oak, less vanilla/oak then expected. Good acidity and decent tannins but all the flavor quickly fades and dissappears on the finish, left with a carbonated water effect in the mouth. It's an okay wine, drinkable and would easily be pleasant during an informal gathering. Not worth the original $25 price but okay for the $15. Drink now.

PNP, mostly alcohol and dark fruit nose. Jammy dark fruit, plum, blackberry on the palate, good acidity but mostly one dimensional wine. Opened a liitle more after three hours, giving brighter acidity and stronger tannins. Finish gives a little sage or mint. A very good wine, worth it in the $20 range. Very good BBQ or steak wine, but not a memorable one.

After two hours open, slight vanilla, some spicy cranberry and saddle nose. Smooth texture, leads to dry, earthy, leather, graphite, and touch of greeness, some chocolate mint finish. Still very tanninc with good acidty. This has a lot of life left, it's an old world wine with little fruit. If you drink now, decant minimum 2 hours. I think I'll hold my other bottle for another year or two. I don't think the flavors will change but tannins should mellow a bit.

PnP, petrol/kerosone nose. Whew, this wine was tight! Young and tart! Grapefruit sour palate, finishes with lemon and sweetness. Wasn't really enjoying it, drank half, will try again on the second day. Bottle label suggests extended bottle age, probably a good idea. day 2 was much better, some zapping sourness and petrol has blown off some. Flavors are strong, long, and lingering.

Popped and poured. Mostly vanilla oak nose. Palate was heavy with dark fruits, some licorice, and toasted/burned oak with lots of sweet vanilla and decent acidity. At first this wine seemed a little over done or over extracted. But after about an hour or so of airing out it opened up, got softer, lighter, and a little more in balance with flavor, acidity, tannins. But still a big fruit vanilla new world wine (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Decanted 2 hours. Strong fruity vanilla nose. Full heavy thick body, juicy, jammy, strawberry cream with dark fruit flavors and sweet vanilla. Fantastic acidity and ends with some anise and herbal notes. The finish is long and lingering. If you like big juicy fruity wines you'll like this. Still has some aging, at least 5 more years and the balance could get better as there is a lot of acidity and sediment. A lot of people say they don't like fruity wines but this is a good one. Just not very complex as the fruit and sweetness is so dominant, but that's what I expected.

Rated by J2K on May 17, 2009

Rating 22-

Decanted 2 hours. Black cherry nose with some cinnamon. Palate was more black cherry, some licorice, dark fruit. The tannins and acidity are gone which makes a smooth mouthfeel but also makes this wine more of a strong overripe fruit without structure. The finish and aftertaste is lingering but the taste just isn't that pleasant, kind of empty and flinty(?). Overall, I think it's good but probably either past it's prime or just wasn't that good to start especially considering 1998 was not a great vintage for Cali.I can find better wines for $30. Drink now.

Blend of mostly grenache, but also, tempranillo, shiraz, and monastrell. Decanted two hours. Typical nose of raspberries. Full bodied, and initial flavors of rapsberry and chocolate and dark fruit but it's followed by heavy tobacco, leather, earth, and a lot of heat on the mid palate and finish. Alcohol didn't really start to blow off until hour three. The tobacco, leather earth flovors are still very strong. I've never drank a grenache with such intense heavy flavors. It's an interesting wine and seems to need time to mellow. Big strong wine for $16. I think i'll buy another and wait a few years/
