At first I was concerned by the purple color. But it was quite nice. And a tremendous value. I'll copy Steve Pollack's description on the poster, "Medium-full bodied with balanced tannins, the 2008 is packed with blackberry fruit, nutmeg and vanilla"

Anxious to try this, but not yet in the Pittsburgh market.

I am curious to compare it to 32054 Quinta da Fronteira Douro Red 2007, also $8.99

Dying for this to hit region 2, it's everywhere else! 90WS, just reviewed by Kim Marcus, this is going to be GOOD.

It's sold out in my area but today people will be coming into the store waving their newspaper reviews at me. I'll direct them to the mixed reviews on pawinetalk.com!! http://www.philly.com/philly/columnists/craig_laban/20110501_Sogrape_Vinhos_Callabriga_Douro_2008_a_substantial_bargain.html

Very good. Dark cherry, plum & vanilla. Balanced with good tannin structure. Lingering finish. I think it will cellar well for 5 to 10 years. The Portugese wines really bring value.

Medium-dark purplish color in glass. Fig and dark cherry on palate; nice minerality; medium tannin; lively acidity. Solid buy at the $8.99 price point—Portugal continues to offer some great QPR wines on the CS.

Decent nose of cherry and licorice. Medium to full bodied, smooth on the palate with black cherry and chocolate flavors along with some spice and acidity coming on the finish, which leaves a dry cocoa flavor. This is surely a good bargain basic wine that will match with a range of food and doesn't have that artificial flavor of most inepensive wines.

PNP. Deep red in color with purple tints. Black fruit on the nose with a bit of spice. Cherry vanilla and blackberry on the palate with spice and a bit of heat coming through. Nice finish. Rated 88 on CT. DTQPR = 91.59

Has an aroma of fig, raisin, and vanilla. Currant, plum (but not too plumy :) and chocolate on the palate; this is another well-made wine from Portugal, becoming one of my favorite producers, and a great value. Great daily drinker so stock up.

I guess I just don't get this wine. It's a nice dry quaff, but nothing to buy any more of. It just doesn't taste all that good to me. Sorry.

Purple color reflects ripeness of the black fruit. Mild oak and tannins. Slightly light in the mid-palate, but nice finish. Good wine for the price. 89 Bob's Bulletin

Just a notch below 32054 Quinta da Fronteira Douro Red 2007.

I'm with jonradus - I do not get all the high scores on this one. Interesting nose, though somewhat closed. Some nice fruit up front, but the mid-palate and finish are poor. Just nothing there. Even at $9 I would not recommend this one.
